How to Select Messages in Gmail for Android

How to Select Messages in Gmail for Android

The latest update to the Gmail app (4.2.2) for Android has provided some welcome new features, like pinch-to-zoom and swipe-to-delete. Another new feature you might not be aware of is hiding check boxes. To select multiple e-mail messages in Gmail for Android, you have to tap the tiny check boxes to the left of each message. If you miss the check box and tap the message instead, the message launches and you have to go back to the conversation list and try again.Google added a new setting that will remove the check boxes entirely, and allow you to perform a long-press to enable selection mode. Once in selection mode, you can tap on the entire message listing to select it, rather than a tiny check box.

select multiple messages      the better, long-press
                                         using check boxes(left)        method (right)

To enable long-press selections, go to Settings > General settings > Hide checkboxes.

Now you can select multiple messages in Gmail for Android without the frustration of having to tap tiny check boxes.

How to Use Kies to back up and restore your Samsung mobile

How to Use Kies to back up and restore your Samsung mobile

Samsung Kies desktop software can sync your Samsung smartphone or tablet to your computer. If you haven't used Kies before, then you may not know that it can also back up the data on your Samsung device. With a Google account, a lot of your data already syncs with Google's servers, but Kies can also back up Samsung-specific apps, like S Planner and S Memo, which come on the Galaxy S3.

Back ups

Step 1: After installing Kies Windows or Mac on your computer, connect your Samsung smartphone or tablet to your computer via a USB data cable.

Step 2: Confirm that Kies is connected to your Samsung device. Once connected, you'll see basic information about your device in the first tab.

Step 3: Click on the Back up/Restore tab and choose the items you want to back up, then scroll to the bottom of the window and click the Backup button.

Step 4: Wait for your backup to finish, then click the Complete button.

Restore

Step 1: In the Back up/Restore tab, scroll all the way to the bottom and click the Restore button. When you get the warning message about closing running applications, click Continue.

Step 2: Choose the backup file to restore, then click Next.

Step 3: Select the data you want to restore, and make sure you want to restore the backup to your device. This is your last chance to back out of the restore. If you're sure you want to restore your data, click Next.

Step 4: Once the restore completes, you'll see a confirmation dialog box, and your device will reboot.

Now you know how to back up and restore your Samsung mobile device using Kies and your computer. We've confirmed that Kies works with a Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone and a Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet.

GOOGLE SOLVES BANNERS AD CLICKS WITH CONFIRMATION BUTTION

GOOGLE SOLVES BANNERS AD CLICKS WITH CONFIRMATION BUTTION

THERE little more annoying than trying to dismiss a banner ad within an app only to miss your mark they make those X's so tiny ,after all. It's not that clicking the ad giving the developer is so horrible that we try to avoid it at all anges, but when you"re in the middle of a game or trying to read through your social networking timelines it is quite the nuisance to be kicked over to  the browser.

GOOGLE found a way to fix that little issue with the latest update to adwords. If you happen to click an edge of an ad,the ad will now display a quick prompt asking if you want to be taken to the ads destination. Its a very small and simple change, but one that makes a lot of sense and will save users a lot of headache and trouble.

Mobile ads are unique in that the lack of precision compared to a mouse and the disruptive action of being kicked out of an app is something that can ruin the user experience for many. Even full screen ads can remain an issue. Take the Scarface game, for instance the game uses full screen ads after certain action that require multiple button presses.Since these occurrences can be random it is easy to click one inadvertently.

It was so bad that the game was completely undesirable to play no matter how fun it was. I completely uninstalled it, and that was that. Its great that google is finally doing something about it,and while developers might not like the missed revenue from those random, accidental clicks that occur they should take solace in the fact that users will be a lot happier to use ad enabled apps

How To Take Nandroid backups without rebooting

How To Take Nandroid backups without rebooting

How To: Take Nandroid backups without rebooting

Android-based smartphone users today would definitely know the terms ‘Rooting’, ‘ROM flashing’ and ‘Nandroid’. Those who constantly keep flashing their phones with new ROMS, tweaks and updates would know the importance and criticality of taking backups before flashing their phones. Backing up the presently installed and working operating system before flashing a new ROM or tweak involves performing Nandroid. This means one would have to turn off the phone and reboot it into the recovery mode, then select the backup function and perform the Nandroid. The entire procedure wastes a lot of time rebooting the phone and most importantly, you spend a lot of time keeping your phone offline and might even miss important calls and messages.

There is a very fast and easy method by using a simple app to take a complete ROM backups android without switching off your phone. No doubt, installing aROM or flashing a tweak would still require you to switch off the phone and do the needful in the recovery mode. However, using this method you can at least save on 60%of your time. This method can also benefit those who keep installing various apps and lik to play with different scripts and kernel tweaks. They Would prefer to take repeated backups of their ROMS before and after the tweaking.

The app we are about to show you is available for free on the Google Play Store and is developed by Ameer Dawood. He developed this app because he constantly does Nandroid backups and does not want to waste time rebooting and entering the recovery mode. We shall show you how you can do the same. Before we get down to it, you would need to download and install two apps on your phone. The first is Online Nandroid and the second one is BusyBox installer.

Online Nandroid is the tool that takes Nandroid backups while your OS is online, and you do not need to reboot into the recovery mode for backups anymore. The app backs up the partitions such as boot, recovery, system, data, cache, cache data, dalvik cache, .android_secure, sd-ext, Appslog and any other partitions you have on your phone. The date format used for folder name is the same used by CWM itself and Nandroid backups created with Online Nandroid can safely be restored using CWM recovery.

Get started. Before you begin, you need to make sure you have the latest version of BusyBox or at least version 1.20 and above. For this, start the BusyBox app and update the version over the Internet. If you run the Online Nandroid app, the utility will also detect the BusyBox version and exit if the requirements are not met. Now start the Online Nandroid app. Online Nandroid is actually a script with a graphical user interface that runs in the background and takes the backups. You need to install this script initially and Online Nandroid will automatically do it for you. Once you click on the app, you will be greeted with a large dialog box stating that you don’t have the script and prompting you to download it click ‘Yes’. The new version of the script will be automatically downloaded and installed at the required location. Later, the display will give you details of the script version on screen. You are now ready for a Nandroid without rebooting.

On the Online Nandroid screen, select the name format you would like for your backups. You have a choice between custom name, UTC time zone name and phone time zone name. Preferred option would be a custom name as you can add the ROM name, date and time as per your choice. Select the custom name and hit the ‘Start Backup’ button. The next screen will ask for a confirmation and the screen after that will prompt you to enter the custom name for your backup. Feed in the requirements and click on the ‘OK’ button. The backup will start immediately and you can see the entire process in verbose mode on your screen. Depending on your phone’s speed and ROM type, the entire process can take anywhere between 5-10 minutes.

The backups are finally stored in the folder ‘/SDCARD/ClockWorkMod/Backup/<your custom backup name>/’. You can safely restore this backup anytime using the recovery mode.

How To Android Reverse Tools

How To Android Reverse Tools Use

here's a cool tool i was shown the other day. it's an easy mode gui for all your decompiling and recompiling needs. ordinarily this would be rather unimpressive. it's not too hard to write a little wrapper for some java commands, but he/she really put some polish on this.

not only does it come with everything you need, including java and bits of the android sdk, but it even has a slick manual and a complete walk-through for my lesson.

I recommend that you update the apktool included with the pack. it may have gone out of date. you can update the other components if you're so inclined but it might not help much.

if you have any trouble decompiling or compilining, remember it's using apktool under the hood so trouble shoot apktool first.

How to Install Office Apps to an Android phone

How to Install Office Apps to an Android phone

In order to explain clearly how to download and install Office apps to an Android phone, I’ll take you through it step by step using screen shots.

There are three ways to install Android apps; firstly, you’re able to download and install Office directly via your phone. Secondly, you can transfer Office apps from your computer to your Android using a USB cable. Thirdly, you can download Android Office apps using a QR code.

In the following example we focus on installing the Kingsoft Office Android Office app.

Step 1: Open a browser on your Android phone and enter www.kingsoftstore.com, as shown in Figure 1.

            Figure 1                                                  Figure 2

Step 2: After launching the home page, you’ll find the product called Kingsoft Office for Android. Download this by selecting ‘Get it now’ or alternatively you can select ‘learn more’ to jump to the product page where you can also download it from. See Figure 2.

Step 3: Then begin the download.

Step 4: After the download has finished it will remind you whether you want to install. Select ‘Yes’ and install automatically.

If you couldn’t access the Internet via cell phone, you can alternatively install Office apps to your cell phone using your computer.

Step 1: Download office apps for Android to your computer. Log into the developer’s official website and download this software.

Step 2: Connect your Android phone to your computer using a USB cable. There will appear a pop-up dialog box asking you how you want to connect the device.

Step 3: Choose 'Connect as hardware'. Then you’ll find your android phone displayed as hardware.

Step 4: Double-click to open the Android phone. And move the downloaded app to the hard drive.

Step 5: Then you’re able to select the app and install it to your phone.

Recently, using a QR code to install Office apps has become popular due to its fast readability. In the following I’ll introduce how to download apps by QR code quickly and conveniently.

Step 1: Make sure your phone can scan a QR code with its camera. You’re able to do that by installing a particular app. In order to download the correct app, search the Internet for the model of your phone along with the “QR reader”.

Step 2: Enter the Android Market or Kingsoft official website and find the QR code for the office app.

Step 3: Use the QR reader installed on your phone to scan the code. This will automatically download the office app onto your phone.

Step 4: After the app has downloaded, you’re able to install it simply by selecting it.

Google seems to be quite intent on tweaking the Play Store

Google seems to be quite intent on tweaking the Play Store

Developers can now offer in-app subscription trials on Play StoreGoogle seems to be quite intent on tweaking the Play Store offering before this festive season. The latest announcement suggests that application developers will now be able to offer trial access of in-app subscription content. The users will have a chance to sample and check out the content for a limited period of time, before the billing kicks in. The minimum trial period has to be of 7 days, but can be longer as well, if the app developer so wishes.

This will be a useful feature for apps that offer regularly updated content that is pushed to the devices automatically. However, the fine print clearly states that users will have to store their payment details in the Play Store profile before they will have access to the trial content. If a user wishes to opt out of the service before the trial period ends, there will be no billing done. However, if the user doesn’t explicitly request for discontinuing the service, they will be charged immediately after the free trial period is over.

This update follows the previous major change that Google implemented back in May this year, allowing in-app subscriptions. However, the latest tweak is in stark contrast to Apple’s policy on the App Store and the in-app subscriptions, where no free trials are offered.

Google seems fairly motivated to clean up and tweak the Play Store ahead of the festive season buying rush for Android smartphones and tablets, particularly the very popular Nexus 7.

We believe this new feature is makes it easier for developers to push interesting content to potential users. Those users who weren’t convinced about signing up will surely attempt to take a look at what is on offer. The moot point of all this is simple - good and unique content will stand out, while the run-of-the-mill stuff will be given a pass. And there surely is a sizable chunk of demographic amongst us who will sign up for a free trial, but forget to cancel the subscription!

We would like to hear your ideas on the same, and also what services you will potentially check out before subscribing.

Motorola announces the ICS-based Razr i

Motorola announces the ICS-based Razr i

Google-owned Motorola Mobility has officially unveiled a new Intel-based Android 4.0.4 ICS smartphone, called the Motorola Razr i. Despite its top-end status, the device is also rugged, featuring Kevlar-coating, and a Gorilla Glass display. The Motorola Razr i will be launched in Europe and some parts of the Americas starting October. For now, no pricing details have been revealed.

The Motorola Razr i is powered by a 2GHz Intel ‘Medfield’ Atom Z2460 single-core 32nm processor with Hyper-Threading (implying two threads) coupled with 1GB of RAM. The Medfield Atom Z2460 processor is the same as the 1.6GHz offering on the Lava Xolo X900, but overclocked to 2GHz. This makes us wonder as to battery life and heating issues on the Razr i with its higher-clock, for it was something the Lava Xolo X900 itself faced.

The Razr i features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display with a 540x960 pixel (qHD) resolution. It also bears an 8MP autofocus camera with LED flash and 10fps burst mode, capable of 1080p HD video recording, and HDR. It also features a 0.3MP front-facing camera.

Other specifications of the Motorola Razr i include 8GB of built-in storage, active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, and a 2,000 mAh battery. In terms of connectivity options, the Razr i features 3G, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n with DLNA and hotspot functionality, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and EDR, NFC, and microUSB v2.0.

The Motorola Razr i is styled much like the Atrix family, with a similar form factor and design. It is just 8.3mm thick, and weighs in at 126 grams – admirable, with the Kevlar-coating. It runs on a 2,000 mAh battery, which according to Motorola, will provide at least one full day of continuous use.

Facebook updates apps for Android

Facebook updates apps for Android

Facebook has rolled out some fairly important updates for Facebook for Android and Facebook Messenger. First up, the release notes suggest that both apps have received performance and reliability tweaks.

Facebook Messenger users can now swipe left to see a list of who is online, irrespective of what device or client they may be using. The default screen is still the one that shows the entire bunch of active and past conversations. You can now also add friends to Favorites, which will show up on the top of this online friends’ list. On certain phones, the text message feature has been integrated within the app, allowing users to send texts to their phonebook contacts without having to switch to the native text-messaging app.

Currently, the integrated text message feature is available on the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy Y, Galaxy Ace, LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black. We expect this feature to roll out soon for more phones. In case you have a phone that isn’t on this list, and have been able to update to this feature, do let us know in the comments section below.

Facebook for Android also gets the list of online friends, but unlike Messenger’s swipe capability, you need to tap on the icon on the top right corner on the newsfeed page. The messages section has been given a redesign. If you remember, Mark Zuckerberg had said earlier this month that Facebook is working on a native Android app for the social networking service, and is expected ‘soon’.

The updates for Facebook Messenger and Facebook for Android can be downloaded from the Google Play store.

In the meantime, Facebook has rolled out invites to select users for the Photo Sync service, for trials and tests. Pretty much like the Instant Upload feature on Google+, Photo Sync will immediately upload a picture that you click with the phone or tablet’s camera. However, Facebook has specified that the photos will remain in a private folder “Synced from phone” by default, allaying fears about privacy and security.

There is no word yet on when the Photo Sync service will be rolled out for all users. Do let us know if you are one of the lucky few to have received the invite for the service’s test-run, and what you feel about it, in the comments section below:

GMail Label Notifier + Widgets

GMail Label Notifier + Widgets

Per-label notifications for Gmail, with phone and tablet widgets

Google have unlocked the Label access with their Gmail apps once more.

Gmail 2.3.6 they haven't unlocked the Important or Priority Inbox labels yet (hopefully they will fix this in the next version). If you *need* this functionality you'll have to revert to using the IMAP workaround again. Do this by hitting menu in the app and selecting "Force IMAP mode", then long-press your email address and select "Force IMAP PW" and enter your details (if necessary). The app will then revert to the IMAP workaround the previous version relied upon.

Update Gmail to 2.3.6 (for phones) or 4.0.5 for tablets/ICS) *THEN* update this app and the IMAP workaround shouldn't be necessary anymore (quicker updates, less battery usage). If you don't do this, and update my app then the Gmail app, you may have to reinstall my app before it works again.

Per-label notifications for GMail! Options include:
  1.  Vibration pattern
  2.  Notification sound
  3.  LED Colour (depending on your device, not all supported)
  4.  Icon colour (10 delicious colours to choose from)
  5.  Notification repetition
  6.  Override silent mode
  7.  Multiple accounts
  8.  Disable notifications depending on time of the day

Requires:
  1.  Android gmail app
  2.  Syncing enabled for labels under the main GMail application
  3.  No task-killers please.
